STAR TREK REBOOT DATE OF REVIEW: JUNE 24, 2021 Director: JJ "The Hack" Abrams This is a very entertaining film. But don't think too closely about the plot or sequence of events. This film has more holes than a chunk of swiss cheese, besides a plethora of assorted stupidities. STAR TREK: NEMESIS DATE OF REVIEW: JULY 10, 2025 The first 15 or so minutes of the film sets the tone in some measure for the fact of the general mediocrity of the movie. Data singing? Worf lamenting that Romulan ale should be illegal, Jordy's retort that it is--which we'd certainly presume Worf would already know? Guinan informing us that she's been married 23 times? But fear not--she makes it clear that she's reached her limit. OK, I can provisionally accept the nod to the notion of transgender, as, at least this points to a genuine human phenomenon. Dr. Crusher observes [SPOILER] that the newly-discovered Data clone has "nicer eyes" than Data, himself, to which Data points out that their eyes are identical. Thus, more cinematic fluff meant purely to entertain, and superficially, at that, instead of genuinely intellectually stimulating content, that hangs together logically, as well, in terms of the larger ST canon, and in terms of the internal logic of each instance. The ship-ramming scene at the end of the film makes no sense either, as ship-ramming scenes usually don't. As the Enterprise rams the Simetar, the Simetar explodes and breaks apart into a million pieces. Are we to understand that while the hull, the shell of the Enterprise, is comprised of some sort of hyper-advanced, hardened material, the hull of the Simetar, a ship portrayed in the film as superior, is made of some sort of far more fragile and breakable material? Highly unlikely. A movie is a work of fiction. But for it to succeed, its constituent elements must bear a reasonable resemblence to truth. |

MUSIC JACKSON BROWNE - LIVES IN THE BALANCE DATE OF REVIEW: AUGUST 09, 2025 Every song perfectly constructed; every vocal line perfectly constructed and sung on this 1986 musical and artistic gem. Jackson is clearly a master songwriter. This unusual, musically and thematically compelling unusual pop-rock, Latin-tinged record treats themes of war and social issues, condemning the first and thoughtfully remarking on the second. Whether a fan of Jackson Browne, pop-rock music, protest music, or simply a concerned American, this pop-rock record, Latin-tinged, deep, political, and catchy, must be in your collection. A fine release. |
